Stretching, Puberty & Growth Plates
Jun 14, 2024FST done on girls and boys that are still growing is safe, as long as you avoid stressing their joints with traction and any stretch that may transfer force to joints (e.g. Level 1 straight leg adductor stretch). Level 3 Press & Stretch techniques work particularly well at reducing tension in tendons that can cause pain during the growth spurt or athletic activity.
Puberty is the time in life when a boy or girl becomes sexually mature & when they grow fast. It is a process that usually happens between ages 10 and 14 for girls and ages 12 and 16 for boys. A growth spurt normally lasts for two years and starts at different times for girls and boys. For girls, it typically starts around age 9 to 10. The fastest point is around 11 to 12 for girls. Boys usually start around age 11 and peaking at 13. During this time, boys typically grow about 4 inches each year. Make that 3 inches per year for girls. Boys and girls stop growing at the end of puberty. That's when their growth plates – the area where their bones grow – fuse.
